According to Google Maps, Sunderland had no independent coin shops, in 2023.  However,  Newcastle Coin Dealers is nearby.  By car, it will take 30 minutes to get there, via the Tyne Tunnel.  The shop is at 7 Nile Street,  in North Shields,  close to the bus and metro interchange.

 

Places to visit in Sunderland 

 

Sunderland’s two main shopping centres are The Bridges Shopping Centre in the centre of the city, and The Galleries in Washington. 

 

The Museum in Sunderland city centre has many paintings by Lowry and is connected to the Winter Gardens.

 

Seaburn, Roker Park, and Roker Beach are in the northeast of the city.  Recently, Seaburn has improved with City Council-funded regeneration.  Many new businesses have opened and it is now a visitor destination with amusement arcades and cafes.  Seaburn is well-connected with good transport links to South Shields, to the north, and Newcastle, to the north-west. Roker Park’s design was inspired by a late Victorian focus on public health and recreation.  It features a bandstand with ornamental bridges and winding paths.

 

Sunderland’s nightlife is around the Empire Theatre  The Theatre has many events including concerts, musicals, and performances. 

 

The Stadium of Light is Sunderland’s football ground and the city has one of the biggest football clubs in England.

 

History 

 

In the late 19th century, Sunderland was a centre for engineering and shipbuilding with the production of famous ships, such as the SS Great Britain.  This was one of the first iron-hulled steamships.

 

The late 20th century transformed  Sunderland with the decline of the shipbuilding industry and high unemployment.  However, the city has diversified its economy and is now a centre for car manufacturing and glassmaking. 

 

Sunderland was granted city status, in 1992, and the city invested in its infrastructure and cultural attractions into the 21st century.

One of the closest coin shops to Sunderland is Newcastle Coin Dealers at 7 Nile Street, North Shields which is close to North Shields’ metro station and bus interchange.

There are many unofficial Sunderland AFC coins but these coins are not made by the Royal Mint and are not legal tender. However, they can be collectible and may be valuable to collectors.  The AFC Commemorative Coin was issued to commemorate Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League.  Also, The AFC Centenary Coin was issued to commemorate Sunderland’s 100th anniversary.
